Christians Taking Dominion in America!
“Dominionism” is a term—often used by critics or secular journalists—to describe a
belief system within Christianity that asserts Christians have a God-given mandate to occupy, influence, and exercise “dominion” over the various spheres of society. This includes government, media, education, the arts, business, and family life.
Presently, critics and secular journalists have nothing to fear. Christians are failing miserably at their mandate of Dominionism.
From a Christian perspective, the concept is not a fringe view. It is a direct application of the “Great Commission” given by Jesus in Matthew 28:18–20.
The mandate for Dominionism precedes the Great Commission; it was also commanded in Genesis.
Dominion is rooted in the “Cultural Mandate” from Genesis 1:28, where God commands humanity to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Christians who hold this view believe that sin does not remove this responsibility. Therefore, the goal is not to abandon the world to secular decay, but to reclaim every “square inch” of creation for the Glory of God.
Many Christians relish failure; we don’t.
Dominionism is deeply tied to an “Eschatology of Victory.” Many modern Christians have been conditioned to believe that the world is a sinking ship, that they should just “wait for the rapture,” and that trying to fix society is futile. The Dominionist approach rejects this defeatism. It posits that Christ is already King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and that through faithfulness, obedience, and hard work over many generations, the influence of the Gospel will grow until it permeates all aspects of life.
In short, Dominionism rejects the “retreatist” mindset. It is the belief that Christians should be master builders, pioneers, and culture warriors who do not shrink from the challenges of the world but instead work to order society according to God’s design.
