Brief Summary of Publication
“The Multicultural Leadership Development Council Report” is a comprehensive study on promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within organizations. However, upon closer examination, several potential negatives warrant attention, particularly the emphasis on race-based representation rather than proficiency and the dangers of placing the wrong individuals in positions of responsibility simply to achieve demographic goals.
One of the primary concerns with this approach is that it will lower standards, de-emphasize merit-based service opportunities, and misdirect recruiting practices. By prioritizing race and ethnicity over qualifications, skills, and experience, organizations risk selecting candidates ill-suited for the roles they are being asked to fill. This can seriously affect the effectiveness, efficiency, and lethality of the United States Armed Forces. Additionally, placing the wrong person in the job is devastating for the morale and productivity of the troops.
Race-based representation will create an atmosphere of tokenism and resentment within the Force. Individuals promoted or recruited based on race or ethnicity may be perceived as less competent or deserving than their peers, leading to a loss of credibility and respect. This can be particularly damaging for those who are genuinely qualified and deserving of their positions, as they may be unfairly lumped together with those selected primarily due to their race.
Race-based promotions will lead to an “us vs. them” mentality within the Force. By emphasizing differences based on race and ethnicity, rather than focusing on shared goals and values, the Armed Forces run the risk of creating divisions and fostering a sense of alienation and disconnection among the Force. This will undermine teamwork, collaboration, and the overall sense of community.
The Multicultural Leadership Development Council may have been well-intentioned, but its race-based premises are a failure—a failure that will get people killed. The only way forward for the United States Armed Forces is meritocracy. That means the most qualified person gets the job regardless of skin color or heritage.
